When many people hear the word shark, they imagine a specific image and feel a deep primal fear. Even though most people will never encounter a shark within their lifetime, the thought of being in the water with a shark elicits fears similar to those we hold for spiders and snakes.

What is the basis of the fear we have of sharks?
Is our fear instinctual or is it taught?
If we trace the origin of the word shark, we find it is not precisely known; common use may have arisen in the 1560's when a shark specimen was put on public display in London.
